Memory & Dreams (1)
I suppose I should mention that I’ve posted an entry on Grace Notes about one thing that happened while on a trip to Chicago this past weekend. You can read it here.
The following entry was written a while ago, but I haven’t had the opportunity to post it:
Dee asked my thoughts about dreams and their connection to memories in her comment here.
I suppose I’m probably the wrong person to ask about dreams. I’m one of those people who can’t remember what he dreams. I can talk to you about daydreams or about goals and aspirations for my life, commonly referred to as dreams. I can speak a bit about the creative process and imagination, fed both by memories or dreams in some form or fashion. I can address what I mean by a dream-like state or about the weirdness and symbolism and mythology of dreaming. I can tell you how it feels “when a dream comes true.” But all of these are either irreparably academic exercises or only reflections while awake of scenes seen while asleep. And since I can’t remember what I see when I sleep, I’m afraid anything I say will ring hollow.
I should point out that not remembering dreams, for me, is the norm. Maybe three or four times a year, however, I do, indeed , remember a dream in vivid detail. Sometimes I’ll think about that dream for weeks, or months. Some dreams I’ve never forgotten. Other dreams are so obviously influenced by the events of the previous day, they’re not worth remembering.
But what are we to make of this? How is memory incorporated into dreams? In my next entry I’ll try to answer this by “borrowing” a dream.
Ah . . . two posts in one day from the recently absent Ray. How nice (one here and one at Grace Notes, both of which are good ones).
You sound like Tom. He rarely can remember any of his dreams, but I’m sure he has them. At least he talks in his sleep occasionally and says the funniest things. I always try to remember what he says so I can laugh again in the morning (with him instead of just at him), but cannot ever remember what he said myself by morning.
I’ve been thinking on the dreams and memories idea, myself. We’ll have to compare notes.

I’m trying to get back into the swing of things again. It’ll take me a while I’m sure. Thanks for the kind words about the Grace Notes entry.
