Perspective

The temperature was in the 20’s today. Snowing slightly.
Walked around with my coat open thinking the weather quite mild compared to what we’ve had. Zero is the new cold. It’s 20-some degrees warmer today.
I guess it all depends on your perspective.

Stuff Near My Desk

In my workspace at the moment, I have:

A pocket briefcase filled with 3 x 5 index cards

a reporters notebook

Three Moleskine Cahier’s notebooks filled with really bad poetry

Legal Pads (White and Yellow, just in case)

A standard Blueline journal

A small sketchbook

A large newsprint poster-sized sketchbook

A digital voice recorder

An inexpensive .mp3 player loaded with podcasts

A portable CD player [...]

On Bowel Movements

My friend Raoul dared me to write a post about bowel movements. Ever up to a new challenge, here it is, such as it is.

Guest Blogger: My Cat Writes on Personal Productivity

I don’t know exactly how he found out. My entire life has been a grand redirection campaign with really only one goal: Get them to do what I want so that I can do what I want.
I see how they treat the dog, how they make him do things. SPEAK. SIT. ROLL OVER. COME. STAY. [...]

Happy Thanksgiving

I’ve always liked the story of Sqaunto, even if it’s mostly sentiment. It’s a good sentiment. The story fired my imagination as a kid. I’ve soured on the story since then, but still remember the sentiment it produced.
I caught a glimpse of that sentiment today. The glimpse was short-lived, out of the corner of my [...]

Angle of Entry

There is something to be said for the past. It hangs on me and taps me on the shoulder as I speed into the future.
"Without the past, there is no future."
I heard someone say that once. I thought it profound even if a bit quirky. But what can be more quirky than the past? [...]

Waiting for the Fat Lady

We were sitting at lunch on a glorious, late summer afternoon. How could anyone be in a bad mood today?
“Is the fat lady singing the national anthem in Cleveland tonight?” asked J.
We all went, “Hmmph.”
In the Tigers/Indians game last night, a three run eighth for Cleveland tied the score and the Indians won it in [...]

The End of Summer

Busy today trying to keep a deadline. More time next week.
The weather has turned chilly; football’s in full swing and pretty soon it’ll be time to do this:

Fall usually reminds me about the end of things. Of course, it’s the end of summer. But, Fall is a sweet season, a glorious season.
Keeping with the thinking about the [...]

Play of the Game

Curtis Granderson makes diving catches look almost routine. He’s impressive enough when you see him do this on T. V. I was at the game last night and can now fully appreciate how far he has to run before he even gets to the ball, let alone catch it. This one saved what could have [...]

Draining Lake Superior

Here’s an interesting story about how Lake Superior is losing water.
There are plenty of theories as to why. None of them are without controversy.
Here are my favorites:

The most common idea is that the water is being diverted from the lake to other places in the United States, most notably Las Vegas (via the Mississippi River).
Another [...]

Things slightly bothering me today…

That the perforation at the top of a legal pad is stronger than the paper surrounding it.
Stupidly aggressive drivers. This I like to call ‘the NASCAR effect’ — Tony Stewart in a minivan.
People who look down on me because I listen to Tigers games on the radio rather than getting cable and watching them on [...]

Great Names

Since we so much enjoyed the small campfire and conversation with our Life Group people the night before, we decided to light up our fire-pit with some of the of the wood we’ve been accumulating from tree trimming the past couple of years.
It’s summertime and and conversations around a “camp” fire progress at a more [...]

In the Middle of the Party

Yesterday, we prayed at dinner for an end to the war in Iraq. We prayed that our men and women be kept out of harm’s way and be brought home, safely, soon, and in victory. Whatever your politics, war just sucks.
This was the same prayer we prayed at our table on Memorial Day.
The difference between [...]

Living on the Sun

My son Joseph had a dream:
He dreamed that NASA sent up a probe  to explore the surface of the sun. The probe accidently crashed into the sun and, seven minutes later, the earth went dark. The sun had gone out. Everyone was fumbling around in the dark. The earth was growing progressively colder.
During the panic, [...]

Still Breathing

You may have noticed a blog post update party on this site today.
All of the posts I had waiting in the hopper finally got posted to the site. There are no masterpieces among them, but maybe a couple of chuckles.
While I was busy with other things, I did scribble some things down just to keep [...]

Monday. Monday! MONDAY! (Entry 5/21)

Every so often, for my own sanity, I go into what I call a "self-imposed news void." I don’t read newspapers or magazines or listen to talk radio or watch news on television. This self-imposed prohibition against the consuming of news products includes not only hard news, but also entertainment news, sports news and–a recently [...]

Housekeeping

I’m not sure anyone even notice, but I’ve deleted one post and about three older posts. The recent post, I decided, was published too soon. The older posts were deleted because I didn’t like them anymore.
Still working my way through some busyness and I haven’t been able to devote time to any new [...]

Almost Over, Really! But, it’s pretty, though…

Dee said this in a comment to my post yesterday:
Don’t you think (or do you) that part of your tiredness comes from the fact that you’re still suffering through "winter" while the rest of us are enjoying a beautiful spring? At least we are here, except for over the weekend.
All of the azaleas have been [...]

Tired

My brain is tired.
It has been a tough couple of days at work dealing with various kinds of “emergencies.” The emergencies were not life threatening. They were more the kind of emergencies that reduce quality of life for as long as they remain emergencies. Since emergency status has been lifted, life has gone on [...]

Day After Easter - 2007

I didn’t have the time this past weekend t complete the story I began during Holy Week. I will try to finish that story sometime this week, but—truth be told—it could be classified as a part of the “infinite” story that never really ends anyway. (It did feel weird leaving off at Good Friday! I [...]
